Mexico: Central America's Hub of Online Growth
After seeing the massive potential for growth in the world’s largest Spanish-speaking country, Blue Global Media entered the Mexican market in early 2011. If past trends and expected growth is any indication of the country’s future success, Mexico will prove to be a strong online force in the years to come.
According to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), there were more than 30 million Internet users in Mexico in 2010. This represents slightly more than a quarter of the country’s population, but a significant increase from 2009. Mexico’s internet usage is climbing steadily and currently, Internet users in Mexico make up 79% of all Internet users in Central America.
This growth is due to a number of economical and social factors. In Mexico, approximately 70% of citizens live in urban areas, allowing many Mexicans to have greater access to broadband Internet connections (where they are available). And broadband is growing, too, as more Internet providers stretch their market reach within the country.
Large urban areas like Mexico City will have an enormous impact on how the Internet in Mexico is used. Some statistics claim that the city and its surrounding area is home to more than 18 million people, making it the most populated area in North America.
In 2000, the Internet penetration rate in Mexico was less than three percent. Today it is 27% and continually rising. Considering the population of Mexico – more than 112 million people – there is tremendous room for online growth in this market.
Blue Global Media’s campaigns in Mexico include English learning programs for children and adults. As the company expands into other verticals, we will continue to leverage the power of this diverse and growth-driven country. In 2011 and beyond, look for Mexico to be one of the more profitable international markets available to publishers and advertisers.
